Master Electricians Australia has opened a hotline for home owners affected by the severe storms in Sydney and other parts of New South Wales, to help home owners get their power supplies reconnected as quickly as possible.

MEA New South Wales State Manager Jody McGann said many homes would need to be inspected by a licensed electrical contractor before electrical utilities could switch the power back on.

The hotline number is 1300 889 198.

“Homeowners who need an electrical safety inspection before their power is turned back on can call the hotline, and Master Electricians Australia will connect them with the nearest available contractor,” Ms McGann said.

“Master Electricians Australia is working with the state’s energy utilities to meet the regulatory requirements to get the power back on as quickly as possible for affected homes.

“In the first instance, the cost of the call out will be the responsibility of the home owners, but it may be something that can be recovered through your insurance policy.

“The important thing is to get the power on again as quickly and safely as possible.”

Ms McGann also warned against DIY attempts to restore the power, and urged people not to cut corners but rather to have storm-affected appliances and electrical fittings tested before using them again.

“This storm has been traumatic for many thousands of families. But it would be unthinkably worse to turn a trauma into a tragedy simply for the sake of saving a few dollars.

“Make sure you do the right thing – get your circuits and appliances tested before turning the power back on.

“Master Electricians Australia is here to help, and we have hundreds of licenced contractors standing by to assist.  So call the hotline and get the professional support you need,” she said.
