Following a year of safety recalls and incidents involving inferior electrical products, Master Electricians Australia has today delivered a checklist for homeowners as Christmas lights start to pop up on homes around the nation.

MEA Chief Executive Officer Malcolm Richards urged home owners to put their safety – and that of their families – first, by consulting the Christmas Light Safety Checklist

“Master Electricians Australia is concerned by the growing number of examples of inferior electrical products on the Australian market, which have led to some high-profile recalls and, sadly, safety incidents during 2014,” Mr Richards said.

“There is a real risk that the sudden increase in demand for lights at Christmas time will attract below-par products on to the market.

“So if you’re buying electrical products – and especially festive lights – this Christmas season, please have a look at the safety checklist on www.masterelectricians.com.au.

“We don’t want to be the Grinch.  We just want to make sure that everyone makes it through the festive season safely as far as festive lights and electricity are concerned.

Mr Richards suggested that home owners look for solar-powered Christmas lights if possible.

“Solar lights are not only good for the environment, but they are much safer for home owners looking to create that memorable display in their gardens.

“It’s also important to ensure you only use outdoor lights and fittings (such as powerboards and leads), and you should have safety switches installed – preferably on all circuits but definitely on those circuits powering your Christmas lights display.

“Safety switches will keep you and your loved ones protected from electric shock, and can help ensure that faulty equipment or an electrical accident don’t turn into tragedy.”
