Newcastle’s GB Electrical Contractors were announced as the brightest sparks in the country, taking out this year’s Accredited Master Electrician of the Year Award at the Master Electricians Australia (MEA) National Excellence Awards Gala in Noosa on Saturday night.

GB Electrical Contractors, which provides its electrical services in Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and Central Coast regions, outshone the best sparkies from around the country to bring home the national award.

GB Electrical managing director Darren Andrews said it was certainly an honour to be named the best in the country after taking out the New South Wales MEA State Excellence Award last month.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be surrounded by all our colleagues and the very best in the trade on the awards night and be acknowledge for our contribution to the industry,” Mr Andrews said.

“Everyone in our team will be proud as punch. Three of us started the business together more than 23 years ago and we’ve grown fairly consistently over that time, but to be named the best sparkies in the country for 2014, will really give our business a huge boost.

“In all of our years’ experience we’ve come to realise how important the people that work for us are. Once you’re in our company you become part of our family and we couldn’t have gotten to where we are today without our people.

“It’s GB Electrical's ability to adapt to change and the commitment of our company's three owners that has really set us apart from other electrical contractors.”

The other winners of the MEA National Excellence Awards include:

  • Business Woman of the Year – Lisa Viczko from K.P. Walsh Electrics in Townsville, QLD

MEA chief executive Malcolm Richards said competition was fierce this year and they were overwhelmed by the number of nominations from electricians around the country who were excelling in their field.

“Being an Accredited Master Electrician is all about having a commitment to safety, reliability and innovation, and this year’s nominees really raised the bar by being champions of excellence in Australia’s electrical industry,” Mr Richards said.

“All of our Accredited members have to comply with the highest standards of professionalism so to be voted the best in Australia, out of the phenomenal electrical talent in the country, is a feat all of this year’s winners can be very proud of.

“GB Electrical Contactors is particularly deserving of its award as they’ve developed a strong reputation for providing a high standard of workmanship, prompt service and they’ve openly embraced new and emerging technologies to ensure their clients have access to the best electrical solutions available.”

The National Excellence Awards gala was part of MEA’s Annual Conference on the Sunshine Coast which featured a number of seminar style sessions, informing and motivating more than 200 delegates on how to future-proof their business.
